About UpStitch’d

UpStitch’d is a creative studio and learning space dedicated to sewing, upcycling, and repair as tools for self-expression, sustainability, and community connection.

We offer hands-on workshops, youth programs, and studio services that make sewing approachable for beginners while still inspiring experienced makers. Whether you’re learning to stitch for the first time, customizing clothing you already love, or exploring creative reuse, UpStitch’d is a place to slow down, create intentionally, and build skills that last.

Rooted in accessibility and creative reuse, our work centers on reducing textile waste, honoring personal stories through clothing, and empowering people of all ages to make with confidence. We believe sewing is more than a craft…it’s a practical life skill, a creative outlet, and a way to reconnect with how things are made.

At UpStitch’d, every stitch tells a story and everyone is welcome at the table.

Meet the Founders

Rachel Gai is a self-taught designer, educator, and creative leader whose work sits at the intersection of sustainability, culture, and storytelling. Originally from South Sudan and now based in Iowa, Rachel built her fashion journey through curiosity, resilience, and resourcefulness. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing with a minor in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design from Iowa State University, she launched her upcycling brand RE/LOADED in 2018. What began with one sewing machine evolved into community workshops, school programs, and fashion events focused on skill-building, confidence, and creative expression. Through UpStitch’d, Rachel is building a platform that educates people how to take old things and make them new again.

Destiny Williams began sewing at age 10 and developed her skills in machine sewing, fashion sketching, merchandising, and brand strategy. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel with a focus in Fashion Communications from Iowa State University, she founded D. Lashay Consulting, supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses with brand development. At UpStitch’d, Destiny leads operations and creative direction, helping translate ideas into impactful programs and experiences for the upcycled fashion community.
